| Central Body | A third-party organisation (as envisaged by the Northern European Working Group) responsible for the processing of notices and counter-notices. |
| Content Provider | A person or organisation that controls the content of a website. |
| E-Commerce Directive | This Directive sets out the circumstances by which an Internet Service Provider’s liability for hosting allegedly infringing copyright material can be limited. It also encourages industry to seek solutions to the administration of this process. |
| Internet Service Provider | An organisation which hosts websites on behalf of Content Providers. |
| Notice | The term given to the means by which a Rightsholder notifies an Internet Service Provider of allegedly infringing copyright material. |
| Notice and Takedown | The name of the process whereby a complainant informs an Internet Service Provider that the Internet Service Provider is hosting illegal material (notice) in order that the material in question is removed (takedown). |
| Rightsholder | A person or organisation which owns, controls or administers copyright works. |
| Safe Harbour | Term used to describe the circumstances whereby an Internet Service Provider receives protection from liability for infringement of copyright and/or wrongful takedown. |
